Fibreglass & Gel Coat WorkMINOR GEL COAT REPAIRS These are generally accomplished with in-house tinted gel coat to a close colour match. It's not uncommon for a boat's gel coat to have faded at different rates to port and starboard if the same moorage has been used for several years. These can be addressed during annual haulout before the chips get larger or there is water ingression.
MAJOR FIBREGLASS REPAIRS These jobs run the gamut from solid laminate to cored balsa and or foam laminates. Techniques will vary depending on the size of the damaged areas and location of the damage. The causes of damage range from stress cracks, moisture ingression in deck cores, collisions or groundings. These repairs involve the use of epoxies and/or polyester resins.
FIBREGLASS SHEATHING OF OLDER WOOD BOATS This work requires that the bottom is thoroughly sound and dry. The bottom is assessed and any problem wood is removed and replaced. This is then followed by the application of fibreglass cloth with epoxy resins.
REPAIRING DELAMINATED TABBING FOLLOWING COLLISIONS OR GROUNDS Most bulkheads on fibreglass boats are attached to the hull with fibreglass strips called tabs. Sometimes enough force from a collision or grounding causes these to shear and let go. These are generally noted by an insurance survey and repairs are recommended. In this case the old fibreglass is removed and the surfaces are thoroughly ground to facilitate secondary bonding prior to new tabs being applied.
INSTALLING SELF CONTAINED PROPANE LOCKERS On many older boats the propane lockers do not meet current ABYC or insurance standards which require self-contained lockers. These are upgraded with either plastic extrusion models under the deck or custom lockers such as those on Sceptres.
CUSTOM DECK BOXES These are popular for power boats that have large cockpits but need additional storage for fenders and fishing equipment. We can design suitable options in fibreglass to suit.
DESIGNING CUSTOM HARD TOPS We recently designed and built a hard top for a Tolly 48. A hard dodger top has also been designed for the Sceptre and a new hardtop designed for a Whitby 42. Pictures can be seen in the photo gallery.
